Honorary medal of “Merit for Polish Culture”

Prof. Hanna Schreiber was awarded the honorary medal of “Merit for Polish Culture” on April 18, 2024, at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The award ceremony took place during the inauguration of the celebration of the International Day for the Protection of Monuments 2024, where individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation of cultural heritage were recognized. Among the honorees was Prof. Schreiber, who received the prestigious badge from Bożena Żelazowska, the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Prof. Schreiber was specifically acknowledged for her efforts in safeguarding cultural heritage during the Polish Army’s stabilization missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. She played a crucial role in devising a training program for Polish soldiers and contributed to research on intercultural awareness in multinational operations, emphasizing the importance of the respect for culture in military endeavors.

The International Day for the Protection of Monuments, observed globally on April 18, was established by the Executive Committee of the International Council for the Protection of Monuments in 1983 and subsequently recognized by UNESCO as an important date of global significance. This year’s celebrations focused on the 30th anniversary of the first historical monuments and the 70th anniversary of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, which was adopted on May 14, 1954.
