In 2024, Poland and the world celebrated for the first time the International Day for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, established by UNESCO at Poland’s initiative. The day is observed on 17 October, marking the anniversary of the adoption of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
On the eve of this celebration, the Museum of Warsaw, together with the Working Group on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Warsaw operating within the Culture Bureau of the City of Warsaw, invites you to a meeting dedicated to the living heritage of the capital — Warsaw’s traditions, customs, and practices that connect generations and shape the city’s unique identity.
The discussion will focus on what residents perceive as the “phenomenon of Warsaw” and on the activities of the Working Group, which aim to document and promote Warsaw’s traditions that foster connection, community, and a sense of belonging in the city.
Speakers:
- Anna Duńczyk-Szulc – originator of the “Phenomenon of Warsaw” project, Deputy Director of the Museum of Warsaw
- Katarzyna Kuzko-Zwierz – leader of the pańska skórka (traditional Warsaw sweet) project, Head of the Museum of Warsaw’s Praga Branch
- Jerzy Majewski – journalist, Varsavianist, and popularizer of Warsaw’s history
- Jan Emil Młynarski – musician, vocalist, and composer inspired by the musical traditions of old Warsaw, founder of the Warszawskie Combo Taneczne band
- Hanna Schreiber – Chair of the Working Group on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Warsaw at the Culture Bureau of the City of Warsaw, Head of the UNESCO Chair on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Public and Global Governance at the University of Warsaw
The discussion will be moderated by journalist Alicja Myśliwiec.
During the meeting, participants will have the opportunity to taste pańska skórka, watch trailers from the “Intangible Warsaw” film series, and join an open conversation about the living traditions of our city.
