Intangible Warsaw. The Common Heritage of Our City
A guide to the intangible heritage of Warsaw published on the basis of a report.
Intangible Warsaw: Traditions, Customs and Practices in a Co-city. Research report.
The report is the first result of the work of the Team for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Warsaw, established in February last year at the Culture Office. It was created on the basis of research and the material collected during it. It illustrates the practices, traditions and customs preserved to this day in the intergenerational transmission that build the identity of people living in Warsaw, shaping their relationship with the city. The report is the starting point for further debates and the basis for continuing the research project.
The main goal of the project is to create a tool for automatic detection of diverse topics/themes in UNESCO 1972 World Heritage Convention and UNESCO 2003 Intangible Heritage Convention summary records from statutory organ meetings with the use of Artificial Intelligence (Natural Language Processing – NLP).
The project is research-oriented and is developed jointly between two faculties of the University of Warsaw: Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics and the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies with the support of MI²DataLab. It is a step towards combining Artificial Intelligence with Political Science/International Relations.
The team consist of four bachelor students: Joanna Wojciechowska, Igor Kamiński, Maria Śmigielska and Mateusz Sypniewski. They are mentored by two master students: Stanisław Giziński and Emilia Wiśnios together with political science/IR researchers: dr hab. Hanna Schreiber and dr hab. Bartosz Pieliński, supported by PhD candidate Julia Krzesicka.
We presented the first results of our common work at the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC) Conference in June 2023, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski, has established a Kraków Intangible Cultural Heritage Team, which I am honored to be a member. On December 15, 2023, the first meeting was held to inaugurate the work of the team, established on the model of the first in Poland – and most likely in the world! – municipal team dealing with urban intangible heritage. Thus, Warsaw and Krakow join forces in safeguarding the intangible heritage of our cities!
